TMMC was founded by Mohammad Shamsul Hoque in memory of his mother, Tairunnessa, a social reformer. Hoque, born in 1943, was a hero during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, when he helped religious minorities flee the country with a small ship he owned. In 1977, he established Tairunnessa Girls’ High School in Balaganj.
The Tairunnessa Memorial Medical Center began as a small outpatient department in Konia, Gazipur District, and has since grown into a hospital and research center. It now consists of TMMC Hospital, a 500-bed hospital complex, a nine-story college building, an administrative block, a ladies’ hostel, and a boys’ hostel. The college is now one of the renowned medical colleges in Dhaka, with all departments.
TMMC is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, published by the World Health Organization (WHO), and is now maintained as the Avicenna Directory for Medicine. The college is also listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED), which allows TMMC medical students/graduates to apply for the USMLE examination by ECFMG in the USA, as well as apply for PLAB, AMC, and NZREX examinations. Graduates of TMMC are also eligible for limited registration with the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom.
TMMC has around 700 students, including students from Nepal and India. The hospital has expanded to 600 beds and provides 24-hour emergency service, with an additional trauma center and EPI. The college has produced 515 MBBS doctors as of December 2018.
In 2008, a nursing institute was established that awards a B.S.C nursing degree. It became a unit of Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College in 2013.
