Overview of Birat medical college (BMC) Biratnagar

Birat Medial College (BMC) is Nepal’s newest medical school. BMC, which began as an extension program of Kathmandu University in 2014, is now preparing for its fifth intake. Every year, we welcome 75 national and international students to pursue their lifelong passions and goals.

Despite the fact that BMC is relatively new, its history in Nepal is significant. Birat Medical College and Teaching Hospital, as we are now known, began in 1991 with a single-bed clinic. Our chairman, Dr Gyanendra Man Sing Karki, has always been a visionary leader and a patriot of Nepal. Dr. Karki always knew he wanted to contribute to Nepal’s healthcare after completing his MD with a specialty in Obstetrics and Oncological Gynecology from the former USSR. Despite the numerous opportunities presented to him around the world, he knew that his commitment to his own people outweighed any materialistic gains. Dr. Karki has always believed that Nepal is more than just the capital and that it should be developed as a whole, rather than concentrating gains where they are greatest. Dr. Karki established his private practice in Biratnagar, Nepal’s southeastern city, in 1993, with this belief in the need to decentralize healthcare. Being able to provide a super-specialty service to a much-needed community aided a large number of people. By 1994, what began as a single-bed clinic had grown to a 25-bed Birat Nursing Home. As one of the first private hospitals outside of the city, many patients benefited not only from not having to travel to India or Kathmandu, but also from our center’s ability to provide healthcare services to neighboring Indian patients.

Birat Nursing Home had grown into a 50-bed tertiary care hospital on its own premises by the year 2000, where it still stands today. Birat hospital has made significant contributions to our people and the country as a whole from this location. We were the first in Nepal to use many technological advances, services, and techniques, and we are still recognized as the only advanced laparoscopic gynecological surgery center.

By 2004, we realized the importance of passing on our vast knowledge to the next generation. We began our academic mission by establishing Birat Health College (BHC), a nursing school, with this vision in mind. Birat Health College now has over 900 students enrolled in 11 different health allied disciplines. BHC has not only produced thousands of much-needed health workforce for Nepal, but has also assisted Birat Nursing Home in meeting its health workforce requirements and maintaining quality.

By 2011, we were ready to broaden our academic mission in health care. This year, we signed the Letter of Intent (LOI) to establish a new medical school in Nepal. After three years of constant construction and lobbying, BMC opened its doors as the newest medical school in August of 2014, and by November of that year, we had our first batch of 75 students who are still studying with us. BMC has never stopped expanding its health care services or academic facilities since then. We established a new stand-alone community-oriented teaching hospital in 2015, which is now a comprehensive 350-bed tertiary care hospital. We see thousands of patients each day as a group and are well on our way to becoming a prominent medical institute of the future.
